About Tanzhaus Zürich

From its founding in 1996, the Tanzhaus Zürich has grown in size and
acquired excellent reputation as a unique institution for contemporary
dance in Switzerland. Tanzhaus Zürich is a contemporary dance centre that caters to the needs of professional contemporary dancers and dance companies with a wide range of services. It combines the possibilities of a well equipped production site with the potential of multi-functional and innovative performance spaces. Tanzhaus Zürich offers daily trainings, workshops, several rehearsal studios and two stages, as well as information and consulting services, thus providing freelance dancers with the necessary infrastructure and supporting them in their profession. The Tanzhaus as an institution dedicated to contemporary dance not only locally but also nationwide and internationally. Regular performances, platforms and a variety of other formats present local, national and international dance. Furthermore, the Tanzhaus hosts the bi-annual performance festival stromereien.

Producing Space
Many of the dance projects that are supported by the City of Zurich are produced in the Tanzhaus. Throughout the year, around 25 different companies and 75 solo artists rehearse their projects in the Tanzhaus. The rehearsal spaces are available seven days a week and are constantly in use. We offer five different studios of different sizes, the crowning jewel of which is the main stage on the first floor that offers a dance space of 400m2. One of the studios is also used as a studio stage. Stage equipment can also be rented, and the Tanzhaus team supports the productions where necessary with know-how in dramaturgy and PR and expertise in lighting and staging.

Training Centre
Dancers do not stop training once they have finished their schooling – training is an integral part of their lives and is necessary to keep their bodies at their artistic and physical peak. The Tanzhaus offers daily training for professional dancers in both contemporary and classical dance, often led by international guest teachers. A range of intensive workshops supplements the daily training.

Performance Venue
The Tanzhaus has become a recognised performance venue for contemporary dance. The regular performances attract both dancers and the wider public. As well as full-length performances, 12 MIN.MAX takes place twice a year, showcasing short pieces and works-in-progress and the performance festival stromereien takes place every two years in and around the Tanzhaus Zurich. Different formats allow the public to watch, discuss or to actively participate and allow interested visitors to gain an insight into different stages of the creative artistic process. This frequent exchange between artists and the public is an inspiration for both parties.

Centre of Information
The Tanzhaus offers a range of information concerning contemporary dance. This includes advice and mediation in the areas of training and further education, rehearsals, productions and employment as well as dance and performance as a contemporary art form. Further information and available appointments can be found on our website.

Meeting Point
The Tanzhaus is a popular point of contact for sharing information and mutual inspiration, both between dancers and between artists and the public. The cafeteria, with tea and coffee-making facilities, is available for rehearsal breaks and also serves as a bar during performances.
